All About Senoia, Georgia

Senoia, Georgia was founded in 1860 and by 1864 more settlers had moved to the area and it was named Senoia. By 1865 a high school had been opened. December 12, 1866 was the day when Senoia was officially incorporated. Senoia is located where it is due to the crossing of two train tracks.

As far as the name Senoia is concerned, there are quite a few opinions as to where the name came from and what it means. One idea is that the wife of Captain William McIntosh, whose name was Senoya He-ne-ha, influenced the name of the city. Another is that John Williams proposed the name Senoia because of an Indian chief who was a philanthropist and medicine man. Yet another idea is that Colonel William C. Barnes suggested the name in honor of an Indian who lived in the area. And finally, it is believed an Indian word Shenoywa was used as the basis of the town’s name to reflect the title of Chief William McIntosh.

The interesting thing about the town’s name is how it is pronounced. Most folks believe it would be “Seh-noy-ya” but it despite its spelling it is actually pronounced “Seh-noy” by locals. So, if you are not a local and are in the area you might want to pronounce it “Syh-noy” just so you don’t stick out!
